Visitation with adoptable pets will be by appointment only for approved adopters. (Reducing our visitors to approved adopters has proven to reduce the stress of our residents allowing potential adopters a better opportunity to get to know their match and has significantly reduced the spread of disease). If you see an animal you are interested in please send an email to info@spcastjohns.org and we will forward you an application. If your application is approved we will contact you via email or telephone to book an appointment.
When you adopt, you’re giving an animal a second chance at happiness. All of our animals are vet-checked, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, treated for fleas and worms, and microchipped before going to their new homes.
Animals at our centre are here for a variety of reasons. Their owners may no longer be able to care for them, or they may be stray animals who found their way into our care.
While they are in our care, our animals receive:
- Veterinary assessment. We treat medical issues before putting our animals up for adoption. Occasionally, some of our adoptable animals have ongoing medical conditions that won’t affect their quality of life (or their ability to make a loving pet!). If that’s the case, we’ll make sure you’re aware of it and understand what to expect.
- Behaviour assessment. Our animal intake staff performs a behavioural assessment of each animal that is brought to us. When you take your new friend home, you’ll know what his/her issues are, and how to correct them.
- Companionship and playtime (enrichment). Our staff and volunteers interact with all of our animals daily, so we get to know them pretty well. Does your new companion need a lot of exercise? Or perhaps a lot of alone time? Is he/she affectionate only on their terms? We’ll tell you everything we know about them. Our adoption process includes an in-depth conversation with you to make sure your animal matches your lifestyle – and vice versa.
