Are you ready to adopt a dog? Dogs can live up to 20 years – or more! Before you adopt, please consider the following:

Human Contact

Dogs need daily human contact. Breeds have different lifestyle needs, so choose a breed that matches yours!

Training

Dogs need to be taught discipline. Obedience training is highly recommended.

Breed

Different breeds have different needs. Do your research to make sure the breed you’re interested in adopting is a good fit for your home.

Grooming

Dogs require brushing and nail clipping – some more than others. Be prepared to find a groomer for this – or learn to do this yourself.

Food Costs

Dogs need to be fed according to their weight. There are a wide range of food choices out there. They vary in price – and quality. Be sure your budget allows you to feed your dog a healthy diet.

Exercise

Dogs need daily walks and exercise. Some breeds need even more than others. Do you have the time to devote to this? Set some time aside every day to get active with your dog!

Veterinary Care

We recommend taking your dog to the vet once a year for a health check. Dogs also need yearly vaccines, heartworm medication and flea treatment. Finally, should an emergency arise, be sure to have the proper funds available. We recommend pet insurance or setting money aside in a separate account for pet-related emergencies.

Age

Puppies are adorable – but have you got the time and energy for one? Do the research – an older dog might be better suited for you.
