Studying for exams? Finishing your taxes? Or doing both? When life gets stressful, the soothing purr of a feline friend can help calm you right back down. Some of the best chill-out pals are the very animals that get overlooked at many animal shelters: senior cats!

Long-term resident Sirocco, aged 12, makes sure our staff get their work done!

Senior cats are typically more mellow than their kitten counterparts. A lot of them are pretty happy to hang out with you at home – maybe even in your lap! Senior cats are fantastic quiet-night-in company. Of course, they still know how to have a good time – many seniors still love to play, and cats of any age benefit from playtime and exercise. But your senior cat is less likely to get into mischief.

There are other perks to adopting a senior cat, too:

  • Their personalities are fully formed.
  • They know basic cat etiquette.
  • They already know how to use the litter box.
  • You know what to expect, medically. Your veterinarian can let you know what conditions to watch out for at your cat’s age. Like all our animals, seniors at the SPCA St. John’s are vet-checked prior to going up for adoption, and we’ll let you know if we’ve treated any medical issues while they’ve been in our care.
  • Older animals sometimes go unnoticed by potential adopters. When you adopt a senior you’re not only getting a furry best friend, but you’re finding a hidden treasure, too!

Until the end of March 2017, we’re waiving adoption fees for all cats over the age of 7! Come meet our sweet seniors  today!

March is Fix Your Pet month and the SPCA St. John’s is encouraging the public to spay or neuter their pets and help reduce the number of unwanted animals in their communities.

Every year, the SPCA St. John’s is faced with the task of finding homes for hundreds of cats and dogs, many of these from unwanted litters. For every litter that comes into the Adoption and Resource Centre, there are even more that end up living outdoors where they fall victim to neglect and abuse. Protecting your pet by having them spayed or neutered can help reduce that number and make Newfoundland & Labrador a safer place for cats and dogs.

Spaying or neutering pets has many other benefits:

  •  potentially reducing health risks
  • improving your pet’s behaviour
  •  reducing the risk of injury, accident and loss because fixed pets are less likely to roam

The SPCA St. John’s needs your help to combat pet overpopulation. We currently spay and neuter the animals in our Adoption and Resource Centre prior to adoption. We also operate a public spay and neuter assistance program (SNAP).

In 2016 we spayed and neutered over 1200 animals!

Battling overpopulation comes at a cost. We are asking for your help during Fix Your Pet Month. Please make a donation and help “Spay it Forward” to another animal in need.

Our goal is to raise $5,000, which will spay and neuter 100 animals!

Meet Bechamel!

This three-legged beauty came to us with her mom and siblings at the tender age of four weeks. She spent the first several weeks of her life being much-loved and well-fed, first with the rest of her kitty family and then on her own.

Playful little Bechamel had a noticeable limp, so when the time came to have her spayed, our partner vet also did an x-ray to investigate.

The x-ray showed that irregularities in her leg growth would lead to a lifetime of pain. To prevent this, her leg was amputated.

Kittens often heal from surgery quickly, and Bechamel was no exception! Within two weeks back in foster care, Bechamel had adjusted to three-legged life, every bit as affectionate and playful as before.

Bechamel is now celebrating her first week in her furever home, which she shares with humans, other kitties, and even dogs! We are so grateful to the team at the CBS Animal Hospital, the volunteers and the foster homes who cared for Bechamel during her time at the SPCA St. John’s.

DID YOU KNOW? We are able to perform surgeries like Bechamel’s thanks to the generous support of our donors, shoppers at our Thrift Store, and to people who attend our fundraising events. Thank you for your support!

The Spicy Kids are 5 adorable kittens who came to us in October 2016 at just 2 days old! Their human had just unknowingly taken in a pregnant cat. Sadly, this sweet kitty had a condition that made it impossible for her to feed her newborn babies, and her human called us for help.

Luckily, we had a momma cat in foster care who had just finished nursing her own kittens. We got her back to our Adoption & Resource Centre to see if she would accept a new group of kittens. She did! Her previous foster home welcomed her back, this time with her surrogate kittens, the Spicy Kids (Cinnamon, Lavender, Basil, Sage, and Paprika).

Now, just under three months later, these little babies have grown into big, strong, healthy kittens! Earlier this week, they got spayed or neutered, and are now off to grow up in their forever homes!

The Spicy Kids were fostered by a lovely couple temporarily living in St. John’s. Are you or someone you know temporarily in the area? Fostering is a wonderful way to help animals in need while you’re here! Please see our Foster Program section for more information!
